  28. Most people need only one port of Kermit, so why would they
  29. buy a CDROM with every port? I buy CDROMS when they have
  30. tons of software I need and don't want to keep swapping
  31. floppies. There's an old Greek saying "Those who have
  32. plenty of butter (in this case CDROM-production capacity)
  33. apply it even to their (how should I say..) seats."

  35. Very often I am flustered by my alma mater's reluctance
  36. to do commercial things that would make it the center
  37. or technological New York the way Stanford is to the
  38. Silicon Valley. But this is not the case here. Many times
  39. I've staked by career in choosing to emulate decisions
  40. made by Columbia elsewhere and they never steered me
  41. wrong, especially when it involved emulating technical
  42. decisions made by Frank daCruz. In NYC, you will find
  43. no better technology than at Columbia. When I was at the
  44. Federal Reserve and we needed to use Macsyma, which at
  45. the time ran on noneof our machines, we bought an account
  46. on the DEC20 systems managed at the time by Frank daCruz.
  47. My own desk shows fading from where, for fifteen years,
  48. I had an HP2621a terminal sold to me by Columbia when
  49. I was an undergrad. It lasted that long. Columbia
  50. doesn't buy junk. They don't make junk either.
  51. Ask the folks at Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
  52. The first A-bomb was made in Pupin Hall.
  53. IBM used to have their first computer research
  54. facility in the building where Frank had his office.
